Last week, Jeff Hamada (founder of the popular website Booooooom) hosted a free screening of the much-anticipated film, An Island.  The film is a collaboration between Vincent Moon, the man behind the camera of La Blogothèque‘s Take-Away Shows, and the Danish group, Efterklang.  I hadn’t previously heard of the band but after seeing a trailer, I thought I’d check out the film.  It was free after all…

An Island is a “musical performance film” and “an abstract documentary about a band and an island.”  The film runs just under an hour and to put it simply, it’s just an extended Take-Away Show with a few anecdotes interspersed between the performances.  However, that isn’t to say that it is not captivating  Throughout the film, we’re treated with some really great musical collaborations between Efterklang and the people of Als.

Vincent Moon does a great job of making the viewer feel as though they are actually experiencing everything alongside Efterklang.  I almost felt a little motion sick at one point but I quickly got over that queasy feeling.  I’m a little embarrassed in admitting this but I did get a little teary-eyed at one point in the film.  Yeah, I’m one of those criers in films and thank goodness, I didn’t actually shed any tears.  I mean, how embarrassing would that be?  Wet eyes aside, the musical performances were really great and the cinematography was splendid.  I was completely enraptured by everything.

Screenings of An Island are happening worldwide so I insist that you get yourself to one.  You don’t need to be a fan of Efterklang or Vincent Moon to see a screening.  Just go for the experience.  The film is really beautiful and it should not be missed.
