January 2, 2012

Well, another year has gone by. 2011 seemed awfully quick and in reflecting back I didn’t feel as though it was as hectic for me, meaning I didn’t shoot as many shows in previous years. That’s not to say that it wasn’t a big year for me personally, I was lucky enough to attend Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco, I also receive accreditation for other big festivals such as Lollapalooza in Chicago and Oshega in Montreal, both of which I didn’t end up attending. But, still, it was good to know that I could throw my hat into those big festivals and get some love thrown back at me. So as I do every year, here’s a look at some of my favorite photos that I was lucky enough to catch this year.

To see more of my photos check out www.mrdavidthai.com.

Starting with the photo up top. That’s P-Thugg, if you didn’t know. He’s one half of Chromeo and yes these dudes make it to my list, yet again. They’re live shows are extremely entertaining. On this particular tour they played back to back nights in Vancouver. All of the photographers / media folks covered the first night, their manager told me that he would slot me in for the second night. Turned out that was pretty amazing, I was the only photographer and given zero restrictions on how to photograph them. During a song change I slapped on my fish-eye and took out my Polaroid camera as well, I lined it up right in front of P-Thugg and he pointed right at me. The Polaroid version of this is quite cool as well, but it’s the colors and brief connection here that makes it a favorite of mine.

This shot right here is from the Wavves show when the California punk band rolled through with Best Coast. The venue area (not staff) was sketchy as shit as I would find out when my camera gear got stolen, no worries though I found the girl that did it. The lighting for this show was AB-SO-LUTE shit all night, but I was able to pull of some real dramatic type shots, my favorite being the one above with all the lights and all that damn fog I was amazed that I was able to pull this shot out. Thank god for my 50mm 1.4 lens on this round. Asides from stolen gear all of the photographers also had to worry about being kicked in the head from the mosh pit that was happening right directly behind us. There were some pretty tense moments but in the end I got the shots I wanted and that’s all that mattered.

In support of the release of A.A. Bondy‘s forthcoming album, Believers, a handful of tour dates have been announced.  Believers is Bondy’s third album and it will be released on September 13 on Fat Possum.  I’m telling you from experience that he is amazing live and should not be missed.

Tour Dates
9/28 – San Diego, CA – The Casbah
9/30 – Los Angeles, CA – Eagle Rock Centre for the Performing Arts
10/4 – Portland, OR – Mississippi Studios
10/6 – Seattle, WA – The Tractor Tavern
10/7 – Vancouver, BC – The Media Club

I don’t usually post art up on here, but thought this was pretty awesome. Back in February Viktor Hertz released a set of minimalist movie posters that he had done, which turned out to be a crowd pleaser. Well, he’s back, but this time taking on the music world and cleverly incorporating images with song names. My favorite pieces are The Beatles, The Supremes and James Brown. T-shirts and posters of his work can be purchased at his online store, here. He’s also planning on doing more of these music ones according to his Flickr, which is great because these are pretty stellar.

See more after the jump.

The official trailer for this came out a bit ago, so why are posting this now, you may ask. Well, official release dates for cities and theatres have also now been published via Sony Classics film company. The documentary of course has had a ton of controversy surround it and a lot of back and forth bickering, but it looks like it will soon hit a theatre in your city, that is of course unless you fuckin’ live in Canada. No Canadian dates were actually posted, so let’s hope that changes in a big way. Oh and if you noticed, at the end of the trailer they showed 4 members, that would be Jarobi, so yes originally there were 4 members in the group, it’s not a mistake.
